Dyslexia Therapy

St. Cyprian’s Episcopal School leads the way in Dyslexia Therapy.  Our trained and certified dyslexia therapy team incorporates individualized instruction in an Alphabetic Phonics based program 5 days/week, 45 minutes-1 hour/day. Our program is a highly structured, multi-sensory system of teaching the functions of writing, spelling, reading comprehension, and oral and written expression with central emphasis on the alphabet and phonics.

What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia is not a disease!  The word dyslexia comes from the Greek language and it means “poor language”.  Students with dyslexia have trouble with reading, writing, and spelling even though they have an average to above average intelligence. Students with dyslexia can learn; they just learn in a different way.  Often these bright students who have talented and productive minds, are said to have a language learning difference.

What are the characteristics of dyslexia?

  • problems in learning the names of the letters of the alphabet
  • difficulty in learning to write the alphabet correctly in sequence
  • difficulty in learning and remembering the printed word
  • reversals of orientation of letters or the sequence of letters
  • difficulty in learning to read
  • difficulty in reading comprehension
  • cramped or illegible handwriting
  • repeated spelling errors
  • degree of involvement may be mild, moderate or severe

Characteristics that may be associated with Dyslexia

  • delay in spoken language
  • difficulty in finding the “right” word when speaking
  • delay in establishing preferred hand for writing
  • delay in learning right and left and other directionality components such as
    up-down, front-behind, over-under, east-west, and others
  • problems in learning the concept of time and temporal sequencing, i.e., yesterday-tomorrow, days of the week and months of the year
  • family history of similar problems

How long does the program last?

Students with average to above average intelligence that have been diagnosed with dyslexia usually complete the program within two to five years depending on the severity of their dyslexia.

Are students “cured” of dyslexia after they complete the program?

Those with dyslexia are never “cured”; however after completing the program most students are able to perform successfully in the regular classroom.  Many St. Cyprian’s students have completed college and have become extremely successful in their chosen professions.
