Pre-school

The primary goal of our Pre-school program is to provide high quality experiences which offer opportunities for children to grow to their highest potential in a Christian community.  Our students learn without fear of failure or rejection in a safe, loving environment.  They spend most of their time playing and working with materials and with other children.  Through interactive play, children learn reading and math skills within the context of their world.

What Teaching Methods Do We Use?

Pre-schoolSt. Cyprian’s uses a “center-based” approach that provides concrete experiences that foster curiosity, decision making, independent thought and, ultimately, learning.  In daily circle time, children enjoy the give and take of group conversation.  This structured activity promotes the development of good listening skills, longer attention spans, and cooperation.  Our program goes beyond academics to include fine arts, physical education, Spanish, technology and library time.  Because we remember the best things that we do, Investigative Excursions (field trips) are an invaluable part of a strong foundation for future learning. We often provide opportunities for our pre-schoolers to gain valuable knowledge outside the classroom.

Who Are Our Teachers?

St. Cyprian’s is fortunate to have a well-trained and dedicated staff of caring professionals who serve as positive models for both students and parents.  Serving as facilitators, they encourage students to develop realistic, positive feelings of self-esteem and self-respect as an appropriate basis for life-long learning.  Teachers work to strengthen each child’s natural desire to investigate, hypothesize and look for cause and effect by using a variety of teaching methods.

What Type of Curriculum Do We Use?

Our Pre-school curriculum is founded on “brain based” theories and current research about how children develop and learn.  Phonological awareness is a precursor to reading readiness. It is integrated into daily lessons.  “Scott Foresman Pre-K Mathematics” is the basis for our math Pre-school curriculum. The weekly activities are game-based with assessment records.  Math is informal and utilizes the manipulation of concrete objects and sets of objects.

How Do We Measure Up?

St. Cyprian’s ranks in the top seven percent of all Pre-school programs in the country.  We are accredited by NAEYC.  This accreditation is a rigorous, voluntary process by which early childhood programs demonstrate that they meet national standards of excellence.  St. Cyprian’s is the only Pre-school in Lufkin that has attained this designation.

How Old Do You Need To Be To Enter Pre-school?

Students applying for the three (3) year old kindergarten and four (4) year old kindergarten programs must reach those respective birthdays by September 1st of the year of admission.  The student must be toilet trained, communicate effectively for his/her age and be of sufficient maturity to derive benefit from the Pre-school Program.
