H1N1 Policy

The Administration and the Board of Directors of St. Cyprian’s Episcopal School have been following closely all health information provided concerning the H1N1 (Swine Flu) virus.  The intent of this policy is twofold – first of all, to provide the safest and healthiest educational environment possible, and secondly to minimize the possibility for rumor and miscommunication to inadvertently disrupt the school setting.
After much research and discussion, we have established the following protocol for the 2009-2010 school year:
• The school is dedicated to staying open to continue educating our students until a major outbreak occurs.  If a large portion of the students or staff becomes ill with the H1N1 virus, we will follow the most current recommendations of the CDC regarding the need to shut down the school.
• Should any of our students contract a confirmed case of H1N1, parents will be notified of the grade and class of that student.  Parents of other students in that class will be encouraged to monitor their children for flu-like symptoms, and take their child to their physician of choice for diagnosis and treatment.
• Children who are ill at school will be separated from their class as soon as possible and their parents will be required to pick them up.
• Keeping sick children at home is crucial to prevent the spread of infection.  If your child is ill, keep them at home until your doctor feels it is appropriate for them to return to school. The current recommendation is that the child be fever-free (without the assistance of Tylenol or Motrin!) for 24 hours before returning to school.
• Students are encouraged to use hand sanitizer or soap and water frequently to minimize transfer of germs.
Fortunately, the local cases of H1N1 virus have been very mild.  Should your child become ill with the H1N1 virus, please communicate that information to us as quickly as possible.  We will do all we can to maintain your privacy but will also be in prayer for your child and family.  Thank you for your cooperation and patience as we enter uncharted territory this school year in the area of flu prevention.  If you have any questions or concerns that are not specifically addressed above, please contact the school at 632-1720.
