Read Across America 📚

Each year, National Read Across America Day is celebrated on March 2, the birthday of Dr. Suess. The annual event is part of Read Across America, an initiative on reading created by the National Education Association. Read Across America Day calls all children and youth in every community across the United States to celebrate reading. To celebrate the annual reading celebration, Lufkin Mayor Mark Hicks visited St. Cyprian’s Episcopal School to proclaim Wednesday, March 2, 2022 as National Read Across America Day.

Here is the proclamation:


WHEREAS, the citizens of the City of Lufkin, stand firmly committed to promoting reading as the catalyst for our students’ future academic success, their preparation for America’s jobs of the future, and their ability to complete in a global economy; and


WHEREAS, St. Cyprian’s Episcopal School has provided significant leadership in the area of community involvement in the education of our youth, grounded in the principal that educational investment is key to the community’s wellbeing and long-term quality of life; and


WHEREAS, the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day, a national celebration of reading on March 2, 2022, promotes reading and adult involvement in the education of our community’s students;


THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Lufkin, calls on the citizens of Lufkin, Texas to ensure that every child is in a safe place reading together with a caring adult on March 2, 2022;


AND BUT IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body enthusiastically endorses the National Education Association’s Read Across America and recommits our community to engage in programs and activities to make America’s children the best readers in the world.


NOW, THEREFORE, I Mark Hicks, Mayor of the City of Lufkin, on behalf of the entire City Council, joins St. Cyprian's Episcopal School in proclaiming March 2, 2022 as READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY.


Mayor Hicks ended his visit with reading "Fox in Socks" by Dr. Suess to the students.
